Journey to Decatur
This artifact  I-Beam from the World Trade Center Twin Towers was temporarily housed at the JFK airport hangar in New York to Decatur, Illinois.
The four day trip to bring the I-Beam to Decatur, Illinois ended on Saturday, October 24, 2015.
There were several stops along the way in which the public was allowed to see and touch the historic piece.
This is a journey of an I-beam from the World Trade Center that was originally constructed starting in August, 1966.  The towers may have crumbled on September 11, 2001; however some artifacts were preserved and stored in an airport hangar at JFK airport..
 
A request was submitted in February, 2014 for an artifact from the World Trade Center.  Several letters of support were written.  Supporters including

On August 7, 2015 we received confirmation a piece of artifact was to be granted to Decatur, Illinois.  We accepted.
 
The journey to pick up the beam started on Monday, October 19, 2015.  The following Wednesday the I-beam was transferred to a vehicle to return to Decatur, Ilinois.  
 
The return trip covered 1,100 miles and over four days through several towns.  
 
Many people were allowed to see and touch a piece of history.  
 
Everyone knows what they were doing on 9/11/01.  We are asking anyone to submit their story from this day as well as to submit something symbolizing their story.   These stories and items may be incorporated in the final 911 Memorial.
